The Office of Digital Learning and Academic Technology (ODL)

Senior Director: Robert J. Fuselier

The Office of Digital Learning and Academic Technology (ODL) supports student achievement in technology-mediated learning environments by providing leadership, policy guidance, faculty support and development, academic technologies, and other resources. An instructional unit situated within Information Technology Services, ODL also serves as the steward of distance learning at FSU. Visit https://odl.fsu.edu to learn more about ODL’s services and role in digital learning at FSU.

Academic Technologies | ODL is responsible for researching, integrating, and supporting instructional technologies that enhance learning. From in-classroom technologies to the Canvas learning management system and tools for student engagement and success, ODL provides faculty and students what they need to navigate and use technology successfully, including dedicated technical support and training.

Instructional Support | Collaborating with faculty and teaching assistants, ODL promotes instructional excellence through the effective use of educational and communication technologies, evidence-based instructional principles and strategies, and research studies on teaching innovations. ODL guides academic departments on developing, delivering, assessing, and improving online programs and administers the university’s course evaluation surveys under the oversight of the Faculty Senate’s Teaching Evaluation Committee.

Academic Integrity | In addition to guiding academic integrity policies, ODL provides in-person proctored testing to support students taking course exams in online classes, high-stakes exams in face-to-face classes, and specialty exams such as CLEP and Modern Language Placement. ODL also coordinates off-site distance learning exams at professional testing centers worldwide and offers remote proctoring for distance learning courses. For instructors administering paper-based, bubble-sheet exams in the classroom, ODL provides form scanning services.

Program Support | As an advocate for distance learning at FSU, ODL promotes online degree and certificate programs and supports distance learners from the prospective student’s first inquiry through the final semester. ODL also assists departments with building and offering distance learning courses in the course registration system and, in compliance with state and federal regulations, reporting data on distance learning activities.
